Introduction

Professional Recruitment supported a long-established Tax Firm in Milan in the search for a Tax Associate. The client, with a strong focus on ordinary taxation, aimed to strengthen its offering by integrating services in the Tax Control Framework (TCF) area. The goal was to expand client support by complementing ordinary tax compliance and advisory with the implementation of a tax risk control system.

Description of the requirement

The Firm had identified the need to integrate a senior professional into the team who could:

  • Support daily activities related to ordinary taxation, advisory, and day-to-day tax opinions.
  • Contribute to the development of a Tax Control Framework department, providing clients with a structured tool for monitoring, managing, and assessing tax risk.

The ideal candidate needed to have approximately 10 years of experience in the Tax sector and a high degree of operational autonomy. The real challenge of the search lay in identifying senior professionals with solid expertise who were willing to join a boutique firm that, while not offering short-term partnership opportunities, provided a structured growth path and tangible long-term professional development prospects.

Proposed solution

Faced with a highly competitive market and a niche of professionals with specific skills, we adopted a targeted and strategic approach:

  • Redefinition of the ideal profile: after a thorough market analysis, we identified that previous experience in the TCF sector was a restrictive requirement. We therefore worked with the client to redefine the search, focusing on candidates with a solid background in ordinary taxation but with the motivation and potential to develop expertise in the TCF area.
  • Definition of a clear and attractive growth path: the opportunity was presented to candidates not just as a new position, but as a full-fledged professional development project, with the chance to work closely with a dynamic partner committed to growing the firm.
  • Highlighting the challenge and innovation: once a candidate with a strong tax background was identified, the position was presented as an opportunity for transversal and innovative growth. Even without direct experience in the TCF sector, the professional was attracted by the chance to actively contribute to the creation of a strategic area, thereby enriching their skill set.

Results

The selection process concluded successfully, resulting in the hiring of a professional with the required experience and autonomy. Although the candidate did not have consolidated expertise in the Tax Control Framework area, they demonstrated a strong growth orientation and the ability to adapt to new challenges.

The Tax Control Framework department was successfully launched, enabling the firm to include in its service offering a structured tool for monitoring, managing, and assessing tax risk.

Conclusions and future prospects

This project highlighted the importance of a targeted and consultative approach in talent search and recruitment, supported by an in-depth knowledge of the market. Thanks to these elements, it was possible to optimize timelines and focus efforts on candidates most aligned with the firm’s needs.

In an increasingly competitive environment, the ability to identify and attract talent with the right balance of technical skills and strategic vision is essential to foster growth and the evolution of professional firms. This success story demonstrates how a structured selection process, guided by consultants with a solid sector background, not only facilitates the onboarding of the right candidate but also lays the foundation for a robust and long-term professional development path.
